FRENCH POLITICS
[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.}' FRENCH CRISIS. PARIS, June 20. That the idea of forming a Cabinet of National Union has been abandoned as impossible was mentioned !>v 4 M. Briand in an interview, though hointimated his desire of giving the new Cabinet the broadest possible basis. He intends first to invite the support of the Bloc National, by offering M. Poincare a portfolio. M. Heriot failed in the formation of' a. Cabinet because, although his programme omitted certain objectionable Socialist proposals, such as the capital levy, he could not persuade, the prominent Moderates that the colour of bis financial policy was more significant than the colour of his reputation. Therefore, although it was announced at midnight on Saturday that M. Her- -~i riot's projected Ministry had almost .* been completed, the Moderates rebelled, because they were not given control of the Cabinet. M. Briand can now, therefore, turn to the right for support with an easy conscience and without the support of dissentient Radicals -and Socialists, who have realised that it is impossible for their Parties at present to form a Cabinet.
