Tlio smuggling of drugs lias several sides. Jnimorous and otherwise, and not unnaturally attracts men whose honesty is not all that would he desired in other walks of life. This was exemplified in a story told at the Wellington Hotary Club's luncheon during the week, when .Mr Bennington was talking about the drug traffic. A certain gentleman in an American port was visited by a “bland Celestial, ' who intimated that for a sum of money running into many hundreds < pounds thirty tins of opium could be bought. The illicit drug dealer sampled a tin of what was offering and found it to be genuine opium, so the money was paid over and the other twenty-nine tins were delivered. Curiously enough within half an hour of the time of the transaction a boat was leaving for the East, and on it went the vendor—and- the cash. Perhaps after all tin's was not to be wondered at. seeing that the 29 unsampled tins contained nothing more potent than treacle.
