Excelsiors and Kokatabi met on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon, and after a bard tussle the local team were victorious by 15—5. Tlie ground was on tlie heavy side which mitigated against, hack play, the game resolving itself into a. good hard forward light. For the winners trios were scored by King (2L Glover and Freitas, while •Nightingale kicked a penalty. For the visitors M. Wallace crossed the line and converted. The game was of a very interesting nature, the, points not indicating the local team’s superiority. Mr O. Gaylor had charge of tlie whistle.
At Greymouth on Saturday in the senior game Stars defeated United by 21 to 15 after an exciting game. Stars led by 12 to 0 at half time.
MAORI DEI’. GAME. GISBORNE, June 19. The first of the trial matches to select the .Maori team for the tour of France and England was played to-day before a record attendance of about four thousand, when TnlrawHiiti (Wairna, East Coast and Poverty Bay), met the North Island, the latter being successful by eighteen points to sixteen. The game throughout, was a brilliant exhibition of Rugby, and was crowded with spectacular and thrilling incidents. Tairawhiti was slightly tllie heavier team, and had much the better of the game until the closing stages, when the better combination and better condition of the visitors told its tale, and they put on no fewer than eight points in the last ten minutes. For the visitors tries were scored by Barclay (two), and S. Ocmmell, of which Pelham converted two, and Love ■one. For Tairawhiti, Winiern, Wilson, Dennis and Smith scored tries, Xepia converting two. ,

A regrettable incident occurred in the senior Rugby match yesterday between Ponsonby and the Marist Old Boys, which match the Former won by 23 points to 6. Half way through the second spell, Webber, of . Ponsonby. was ordered off. Lucas, tbe All Black player and" tlie captain of the Ponsonby team, was compelled to follow shoi-tly afterwards.
