The new bridge at liiangahua Junction has been opened for traffic. Tine Public Works Department will shortly call tenders for the construction of a permanent approach at the southern end of the bridge. The gap has Leon bridged temporarily, to enable traffic to pass over until the permanent work is effected.
Confirmation of the recent report that South Island interests were purchasing Australian flour for distribution in New Zealand is supplied, says a Wellington correspondent, from the cargo manifest of the Sydney steamer Manuka, which is landing here the exceptionally large consignment of 12,000 sacks of flour from Australia.
The death took place at the Westland Hospital on Sunday of Mr William Bain. Deceased in the earlier days resided in Hokitika and was for a number of years a lieutenant in the First Westland Rifles, having been on the Coast for about 00 years. During •late years he was a resident of Di 11liianstown, Kuinara. He was a brother of the late Mrs .1. M. Aitken. and 81 yours of age. The funeral will take place to-morrow at 10.30 a.in.
For winter reading it would he hard to equal the warmth of laughter to be found in each issue of “Humour.” Here is just one of the few hundred laughs in the latest issue. A country yokel is buying an engagement ring and puts the following anxious question to the jeweller; “Yes, I likes the diamond ’im at five boh; hut ’event you got any initiation ’mis cheaper like'” The result of the recent big competition is announced in “Humour” of June lllli.
The cleverly humorous cover drawn by Mr M. Matthews of Auckland for tin■ June “Aussie” gives an indication of the wealth of humour to ho found inside. This is the month of chilblains; hut there is comfort even in chilblains, if you have a warm fire
and a copy of “Aussie.” One of the host contributions in this latest issue is a fine poem “Days A gone,” by Hod Quinn. There is also a swinging poem, “The Main Trunk Limited” which caught our fancy in tho N.Z. section, in picture, story and joke the latest issue of the popular monthly would be hard to heat.
Almost four weeks after the day of the double drowning accident off the Grey mouth bar (on Sunday, May 30th last), the body of one of the victims, Richard Steele, eoal miner, of Blaketown, about -Li years of ago. was recovered on the sea beach at l’uimkaiki on Saturday, about midday, the first ones to notice it being a number of children, ft was decomposed to a considerable extent. The body was brought in the evening to Grey mouth. Tho late Boberl (“Buff”) Steele was well-known and was employed at Rcwumii State .Mine, leaving a widow and family of seven children.

Two men accented and were about to have it when the police arrived. The Magistrate ruled that members of a football club were not bona fide guests and wore not invited for a meal as guests wo 11 Id he. The licensee was fined £2 with costs.
