THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Sound Advice. if the Government din make a present of a million and a half to the railways, instead of insisting that they must pay their way, it cannot defend its refusal to reduce taxation. laconic tax is still oppressive, .and customs taxation is equally burdensome to the extent that heavy duties are levied on household necessaries which are rot produced in the Dominion, so that lhe question of protection does not arise. There is. however, the consideration tl\it most of these articles can be supplied from Britain, and substantial reduction of the duties would he of assistance to British industry as we.IJ as relief to local consumers. The state of the national finances and the position in regard to revenue from taxation doubly justify proposals in next Budget for substantial reductions of both direct and indirect levies.—“ New Zealand Herald.”
