PARLIAMENT

OPENING TO-DAY. (••Press” ■ Correspondent). WELLINGTON, June 11. The new Parliament -will be opened by Commission on Wednesday, when the usual formalities incident Lo the opening of a new Parliament will be gone through. Members will take the oath of allegiance and a Speaker of the House of Representatives will be elected.

After the Speech from the Throne lins been delivered on Thursday. Urinal business will be transacted in the House of Representatives, and an adjournment will then bo made until Friday afternoon, when tributes will be paid to the memory of members and ex-members of the legislature '"bo have died during the recess. I lie House will afterwards adjourn as a mark of respect to the deceased. The Address-iu-Reply debate in the Lower House will be opened at 7.30 p.lll. on Tuesday, June 22. Mr 11. L. Taplev (Dunedin North) will he the mover, and Mr W. .Tones (Marsihm') the seconder.

So far no Whip lias been sent out for a Government caucus, for which at present there seems really no necessity. The Government has Bills in considerable number ready; in fact, the preparation is more advanced in this respect than for several years. The session is expected to close early in October, or perhaps about the end of September. Air C. E. Stathain will be elected Speaker of the new Parliament, ft is not likely that anyone else will be proposed for the office, though there has been some criticism of Mr Statbam’s administration in regard to the internal affairs of Parliament. It is generally recognised that he has proiod himself to be the best Speaker Once the time of Sir Maurice O'Rourke.
