WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD

MONDAY, JUNE 14th.

The Board met at 8.15 p.m. Present:—Messrs J. J. Breeze (Chairman), E. A. Wells, G. Davidson, R. Meharry, W. Jeffries and M. Keenan.

The Chairman extended a welcome to Air Keenan on taking his seat at the Board table.

The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. The Chairman referred to the death of Air F. W. Thompson and moved that the sympathy of the Board he conveyed to the widow and family of the late Air F. W. Thompson, who had been Superintendent of the Ambulance Brigade. Seconded by Air Davidson and carried in silence.

The Chairman moved that the Board congratulate the Hon R. A. Wright on hi* appointment as A!blister of Education. Seconded by Air Davidson and carried. INWARD CORRESPOX HENCE.

Air Jeffries moved that the Board rescind the motion of the February meeting deciding to withdraw from the Hospital Boards Association and that the Board continue to he a member of the Association. Mr Jeffries stated that he had not been present at the February meeting or lie would have opposed the withdrawal, which he considered was not the right action to take.

.Mr Davidson said lie had moved to withdraw as lie was of opinion that the Association did not consider tho smaller Boards' requirements. The Chairman seconded the motion stating that though he had favoured the withdrawal he now considered it was advisable to continue with the Association. Mr Wells supported tho motion which was agreed to. From Hospital Department, passing levy for the year.—Received. From National Provident Fund in regard to payment of fees.—Received. From A. B. Spiers in reference to tho admission of a patient.—Received. From South Canterbury Board agreeing to reciprocal relations for maintenance of patients from either district.—Received.

From Statioiimnster. Hokitika, igreeitig to use of siding at Sea A T ic\v In- Hospital Authority.—Received. From three members of the domestic staff agreeing to join the superannuation staff.—■'Received and recommended.

From Druids Lodge, stating consideration was being given to guarantee of members for hospital maintenance fees.—Received, consideration deferred.

From Unworn Hospital Board in reference to payment in connection with payment of Friendly Societies’ members’ maintenance fees. —Received. ft was resolved to suggest reciprocity between the two hospitals. From I>. J. Evans, enclosing £2 2s ns donation, being surplus from recent

From Surgeon-Superintendent reporting on May Ist there were patients in the hospital, 24 males, 14 females—3B; admitted during May 2(1 males. 17 females—33; total treated 44 males, 27 females—7l ; discharged cured 17 males. 3 females—2o; discharged relieved I male. I female; died, 2 females. Total discharged, IS males. (5 females—24.

Remaining in hospital on 31st .May 26 males, 21 females—47.

Patients in hospital for two months 12 males, 8 females—2o.—Received. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £4BO 9s lOd.—Received and adopted. The Treasurer reported receipts, £499 16s fid; payments, £7(11 6s Id; credit balance. £B5l 9s 2d.—Received. The Chairman referred to a reference by a southern correspondent of the "Guardian,” which stated the Board had tlone nothing in regard to providing a wheeled stretcher for South Westland. The Chairman stated

The suggestions made had proved rpiite unsuitable and enquiries from the Hospital Department and elsewhere had failed to provide a stretcher suitable for the south. The Hoard discussed the matter and Hie Secretary was instructed to write to the southern correspondent who had formerly communicated with the Board and again explain the position and the willingness of the Board to provide a stretcher if a suitable design would he supplied.
