COMPETITIVE ESSAYS

It will be roc-ailed that ill connection with the visit of the Westland school children to the Dunedin Exhibition priaes were offered by Mr W. J. Butler and others for competitive essays in regard to the observation of the pupils when touring the Exhibition. The subject set specially was “The Secondary Industries Court of the Dunedin Exhibition with special referenda to the application of the Industries to Westland.” Only three essays were received and tliese were submitted to Mr S. J. Irwin, Schools’ Inspector under the Canterbury Education Board. The following is Mr Irwin’s report in regard to the essays : “I return herewith the three essays written in connection with the recent visit to the Exhibition. I have placed them as follows: Ist.—Scriptor. 2nd.—Aorangi 3rd.-—Clover. “Scriptor” has made a quite promising attempt to deal with the sul>ject and indicates that his (or her) time at the Exhibition was well spent.” As the identity of the writers is not known, teachers will please-notify Mr Evans at the County Office, when the prises to be awarded will be forwarded. Each competitor will receive a prize. It is proposed to publish the essays in order of merit for paid' information.
