NEW STEAMER SERVICE
LYTTELTON TO AKAttOA. » A new steamer service between Lyttelton and Al-Jaroa will be inaugurated about the middle of this month. Mr G. A. AYood, of Hokitika, owner of the small stopmers John Anderson and Orewa, completed arrangements for the new service this week. The John Anderson will commence the service and the Orewa will take over in the course of a few weeks. The new service will extend to x\ ainui, Takamatua and other points round Akaroa Harbour. For the past four years, since the withdrawal of the steamer Cygnet, there has been no regular steamer service, but the demand made of recent months on the John Anderson to make special trips has encouraged Mr Wood to inaugurate a regular service. The Orewa was purchased bv Mr Wood about- a year ago from the Northern Steamship Company, Auckland, and transferred from the nor--1 them port to the West Coast, where she was used last saason in the whitebait canning industry, ill which hei owner is engaged. A cannery was installed on the vessel, and she worked the rivers as far south as the Paringn. On account of canneries having been established ashore it has been decided to employ the vessel on the LytteltonAkaroa trade. The Orewa. is a small steamer, about the size of the John Anderson in length, but with about 2ft Gin more beam. Messrs Kinsey and Co. will be her Lyttelton agents.
