i Negotiations were commenced at a recent, conference on the West Coast for the framing Of a fresh agreement between the Stale Coal Miners’ Union ami tlie Mines Department. Mr A. 11. Ki ni lie 11 (Under-Secretary of the Department), who attended the conference in an official capacity, informed a “ Dominion ” reporter that the demands made on behalf of the union included the granting of concessions which were not in operation at any other colliery on the West Coast, and which were addition to those agreed to between the representatives ot the West Coast Miners’ Council and the representatives of the New Zealand Coal Owners’ Association at a conference held in Rcefton early in May. If such demands were agreed to. said Mr Kiinbeil, it would put the operation of the State collieries in a much worse position, from the point of view of competition, than was the ease at present. Mr Kimbell accordingly informed the representatives of the union that be could not personally agree to accede to all their requests, but promised to submit them to the Minister of Alines.
