A COLLISION. XFAY PLYArOUTH. June 11. A collision between a trnmear and a motor car at a street intersection resulted in .serious injury to .Mrs E. G. ll'.lwin, ol l’uiliho. The car driven by -Mr Elwin contained also two small boys who sustained minor injuries. Mrs Elwjn was removed to the Hospital, but the exact nature of her injuries have not ye- been ascertained.
TALAIIGE AT fON DEE EN D ED. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 11. Addressing the Chamber of Commerce, Afr If. D. Thomson (Undersecretary of Immigration) give an emphatic contradiction to the statements tlmt a large number of Government immigrants had returned to England and that they were swelling the local Unemployed. Not five |or cent had returned to England and of the large number introduced during tho last few weeks everyone was sent to employment or friends, about 65 pc-r cent going to the country and the balance to the towns, being artisans or tradesmen. He expressed satisfaction also with the working of the working of the Chamber’s scheme of introducing public sehoi boys, which h'ul proved a marked success. He saw no reason why the Dominion should reduce its immigrants below 10.(5(10 i or annum, who could be,readily absorbed. but would not at present advocate increasing tlm quota.

A big property deal fin the business area of Gisborne is reported, Pettie Company having acquired the freehold of lialf an acre of land on which their present premises and William Kettle’s offices stand, for £27,000. WELLINGTON, .lime' Kb The Finance Committee of the City Council has concluded its task of weeding out the many applicants for the position of town clerk mul city engineer. ft is understood that in each case the applicants have been fined down to a very few and that this was practically arrived at by allowing members of the Fitrance Committee to go through the applications privately in their own homes or offices. In il is manner of independent judgment a curiously unanimous conclusion v as arrived at by the members of the committee. The final appointments '-ill he mad© by the full council, possibly on Thursday week. UNEMPLOYED. PALMERSTON N., June 11. A meeting was held this morning at the request of the Prime Minister. All Nlisli M.P.. presiding, to consider a means of relieving the unemployment position locally, which is very acute. The Labour Inspector reported ■ that there were in town 135 married men with dependants, totalling -138 out of work as well as 37 single men. Of these totals, there were 30 distressed cases affecting 123 dependants. Aftei a discussion oil local melisures for relieving the position, a committee v ns set up to find employment in town and select deserving cases for engagement. It was decided to send the .following resolution to Mr Coates:— “That we view with alarm the amount 1 of unemployment in Palmerston North and consider as the railway works hero have been commenced and constitute work of a productive nature the remedy is easily available by pro•ridign more work on the deviation in
order to absorb as far as possible all tho local unemployed. GOOD FOOD WASTED. "WELLINGTON. June 0. A letter from the Ray of Islands Swordfish Club was received tit lrst night’s meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, in which it was stated that inquiries were being made to see if the swordfish caught* there could not be frozen and sent to the United States. The secretary of the club had been informed by Mr Zane Grey that the swordfish thrown away at the Bay of Islands last season was good food wasted.
The chamber decided to await fur tber particulars before taking any re tion.
MANAIA ASHORE. THAMES, June 11. The M.nnaia is ashore on Watchman, a small island a mile from Slipper Island, which is about five miles from Tnirua on the East Coast of Coromandel Peninsula. Watchman is about 30ft. high. The ship appears broadside on from Tnirua, with a dip in her stern. She is in a very exposed position. Cary Wriglit and party, of Tairua. proceeded early this morning b\> launch but have not yet returned. At 10 a.m. the Ngapuhi arrived and is rendering assistance. A fair sea is running.

June 10. At the meeting of the patriotic societies yesterday. Air F. W. Mnnton made a statement for blind soldiers and sailors. He said that £SOO had been paid to St. Dunstan’s. £4514 had been spent in loans to blind soldiers. £(54 13s 5d towards Christmas gifts, etc., to blind soldiers, £ll in advertising in “Quick March.” The total funds raised were 08,1.39, of which Mr James Coleman, of Hawke’s Bay. gave £1(500, the AYar Funds Relief €3OOO, Canterbury C.T.A. £IO-”8, Auckland C.T.A. £ll5OO. .Manchester F.1.0.0.F. £6(54, Otago C.T.A. £375. .-state of Airs Afandel £2OO.
