The Captain of the Star fleet of whalers informed the “ News ” that a mishap of a serious nature occurred on the Sir James Clarke Ross while at New York, when three seamen succumbed to poisonous gas. The ship bad completed the discharge of oil and the three men descended into tlie empty tank where they were quickly overcome. AVheu they were brought to the deck they had expired. Captain Anderson descended to their aid hut fell unconscious and was with difficulty revived after being brought oil deck. SUPREME COURT. BLENHEIM, June 10. The Supreme Court has issued a writ of injunction with 20s nominal damages; restraining \Vin. Edward Gascoigne, grocer from selling Palm Olivo soap at less than the price fixed in the agreement he had entered into with the Palm Olive Coy.; which brought an action against him. 9he defence was that tie selling of soap at eightpenee-halfper.ny for cash was equivalent to selling ii at nine-pence, the fixed price, subject to a discount, but Judge Ostler held this was a breach of- the agreement. Casts on the middle scale were allowed. IN MEMOIUAM. , RICHARD JOHN SEDDON. WELLINGTON, June 10. The 'annual ceremony of placing wreaths on tho late Rt. Holi. 11. J. vSeddon’s monument was carried out to-day, on the twentieth anniversary of his death, by a large attendance. Air J. J. McGrath on behalf of admirers of the late Ah- Sodden invited the Hon. R. Melvenzie to lay the wreath. Him. It. McKenzie- eulogised his former chief and outlined his humanitarian legislation.
SUPREME COURT DECISIONS. ■AUCKLAND, June 10. At the Supreme Court, Justice Stringer gave judgment in the action by the Public Trustee in a deceased estate against the Wailii G.M. Coy, claiming damages on account ol the death of William Henry Angell killed by the accidental fall of a beam from the roof of a smithy in which be was accustomed to work. Judgment was given for £1,250 (£-150 to the widow, and tlio remainder to be bold by the plaintiff).
In the ease of W. N. Chamberlain against tlio Minister of Public Works, claiming £2,370 damages, alleged to be caused to plaintiff’s property by the Oliineimiri river improvement works, the Court held the claim must tail, hut the parties are to pay their own costs.
SUPREME COURT SENTENCES, HAMILTON, June 10
At the Supreme Court to-day Corneius Buckley, a middle-aged man, was enteuccd to two years’ reformative reatment for indecently assaulting wo little girls.
James Gothorp, described as a bad character, to two years hard labour for forgery at Alorrinsvillc. William Johnson, described as a waster, to twelve months’ hard labour for forging and, attempting to utter a cheque for £IOO at To Awamutu.
AUCKLAND EXPENDITURE. AUCKLAND, June 10. Unemployment in Auckland will be met in consequence of the successful outcome of negotiations between the .Mayor and Prime Minister. The Government lias agreed to find £117,000 as its share of the cost of constructing
the proposed waterfront roadway to Orakei and lias authorised the City Council to raise £IOO,OOO for providing relief works for unemployed without taking a poll of the ratepayers. OBITUARY.
