Sprockets, the capitalist, and formerly head of the Oceanic Steamship Company trading to New Zealand and Australia, died to-day at San Diego. He had .been ill for some time. CANADIAN FINANCE. OTTAWA, June 7. Parliament to-day authorised that the Government should borrow 150 million dollars to retire the loans maturing in 1926-27. The (Minister of Finance, Mr Robb said the money may be borrowed wherever it is the cheapest, in accordunce with the usual custom. EXPEDITION TO CARRY ON. NEW YORK, June 7. Tho “New York Times’s” Detroit correspondent says:—A conference will bo hold to-morrow by the Board of Control of tho Detroit Arctic Expedition to decide on future plans tor the Expedition, winch has been •emporarily halted. Captain Wilkins and Lampliier have been ordered back to Fairbanks from Point Barrow. Persistently foggy weather and tbe failure of the to function satisfactorily have made this move advisable. The conference may decide to request Captain Wilkins to return to Detroit for an extensive consultation regirding the continuance of the expedition possibly next spring. The Board has stated that it has no intention of setting aside the original objective of the Expedition, which thus far'is said to have justified itself in the meteorological data obtained and the charting accomplished. Tho Board in a statement added: — “Neither tho flights of Amundsen nor Byrd, heroic as they were have in any sense impaired {lie Detroit Expedition’s 'plans.”
The Board compliments Captain Wilkins on having already flown To a total of fifty-two hundred miles ever trackless country, thus equalling the entire mileage of both the Byrd and Amundsen’s flight put together, liis achievements from a public standpoint, have been unfortunately less spectacular, and there lias been a tendency to'feel that be had failed, ibis is not the case. Tho Detroit expedition may even he resumed next autumn, if special equipment suitable for autumn Hying can be constructed.
