WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL

TUESDAY, JUNE Bth. OVERSEER MILLNER’S REPORT. I have the honor to report upon the progress of works during the month of May. NORTHERN RIDING. Stafford Drainage, £l5O, was commenced the latter week of April and 15 chains of clearing 5 chains of drain, and two rows of 18-inch concrete pipes excavated for and laid under the Main Highway upon the line of the drain. Arahura River .Protection, £ll2. Tins work was commenced and a section completed to protect the northern abutment of Malfroy’s Bridge. Painter’s Creek Bridge approaches. Owing to the continued rainfall very little progress was made except during the last of the month when work was continued at intervals in extending the western approach. -MAINTENANCE. Repairs were effected to portions of Arahura Valley and Humphrey’s Roads and gor.se and blackberry cleaned from Arahura Valley Road. Water tallies cleaned on Arahura Valley and Blue Spur-A rahtiru Road. CENTRAL RIDING. Station Road Construction.—The contractors for this work have completedtho formation the specified distance; also a few chains of metalling. The whole of the work has been constructed in. a workmanlike manner and is a firstclass iob.

Back Crock 'Widening, £loo.—The clearing and a short portion of the formation was completed during the last wools in May. .MAINTENANCE.

Repairs were effected to portions of Lower Kokatahi, Upper Kokatahi, Kokatahi Bridge, Koitcrangi, Lake Kanieri, Blue Spur and Hokitika-llau Man Roads. Water-tables were cleaned on Lower Kokatahi. Lake Kanieri and Arthurstown Roads and a road drain on South Hokitika Road cleared and constructed a distance of .‘ls chains. Wind-blown trees were removed from Seddon’s Terrace Track and an eightinch diameter concrete pine drain constructed on Arthurstown Road. The necessary pile-driving gear, piles and caps were carted up to Harris Creek, Koitcrangi, in readiness for the new bridge construction. Portions of Hokitika Flat and Whitcombe .Valley Ronds were graded and rolled with the teuton roller and decking renewed on the Kokatahi River Bridge and a culvert on Whitcomb Valiev Road. Concrete pipe construction was continued at the yard Kanieri, under the direction of F. Selby. NECESSARY WORK.

A portion of Robinson Road drain, adjoining F .Winter's residence is being continually blocked by small slips and -0 fS-ineli diameter concrete pipes are required to place i” the drains to prevent further damage. A danger also exists; During Hoods one small child recently fell in the drain wliicli is five feet in depth and was rescued with difficulty. Lake Kanieri road is cutting up in several places beyond the Forks, Ifokitika-Haii lf.au and Blue Spur Roads are being cut up by heavy tim her cartage. SOUTHERN RIDING. Wailaugi South Bank- Extension.— The contractors have made good progress with tin's work and to date have completed 63 chains of clearing, grubbing and surface formation, also two small covered culverts, with inlet and outlet drains in a workmanlike manner. Evans Rond Construction, £3OO grant. —The contractors for this work have made fair progress, thirty chains of formation having boon completed to date. The recent fine weather has allowed the contractor to attend to the stripping and opening the gravel reserve in readiness for metalling. Roadman Nolan, attended to repairs to various necessary works in the Wataron District and Roadman Whitiskie effec' ed repairs to 'Wanganui Flat, Haddock and portions of Robertson Roads.'The approach to If. Weenink’s holding was satisfactorily completed, also the approach in the Post Office at Telaho. The drain on the road reserve between Messrs O’Neil’s and F. Gunn’s holdings, 'I eta ho, was completed the necessary distance in a very creditable manner. Repairs were effected by metalling the worst portions of the Branch Road between Knknpotahi Bridge and AVa.it aha Beach Road; also the old Ross Road between Mason's and the northern hank of Donnelly’s Creek.
