In iconneetion with the deaths of Detectives Walsh and Pitman (cabled an 12th May), the police have arrested Evan Clarke, 32, a hotel licensee _ of South Roulder, Phillip John Treflen. 31 a barman, and charged them with the wilful murder of Walsh. While motoring along the road near the township of Collector about twentviwo miles from Goulbourn, a commercial traveller was called on to pull up by a man on the road. He did so, but as lie could get no sense out of him, lie presumed he was intoxicated and drove on. Before he had proceeded a yard..a shot was fired and a bullet Kissed through the hood of the car and whizzed over the travel lei s head. ,c traveller informed the police at Collector and with a constable returned to the spot where he had stopped. Roth entered the scrub adjoining the road and thev were startled by a report ot , firearm and a bullet passed through the sleeve of the constable’s tunic. The flash appeared about forty yards away. The two then returned to Collector for additional police and a black tracker is being sent from Goulbourn to assist in the search.
