“HE WHO GETS SLAPPED” —TO-NIGHT.
Lon Chaney is here again, and in a role that matches his faultless "technique. Chaney, pre-eminent among character actors, has won for himself a nidle in filmdom no other plavcr could fill. Witness his past successes, “ The Hunchback- of Xotre Dame” for one, arid it is plain why this is so. In his newest picture, Victor Seastrum’s production of Leonid Andreyev’s play, “He Who Gets Slapped,” lor Metm-Goldwyn, Chancy rises to, even greater heights by maintaining the excellence of his work minus the assistance of grotesque make-up. Although appearing in the title role, "Ho,” a clown. Chancy interprets the moods and passions of his character for the most part in semi-ring attire, and is a colorful, tragic figure. He has with him. in the featured east, the I screen’s most lovable couple, Norma Shearer and John Gilbert, whoso romance happily contrasts with the tragedy of the principal character, though they are not entirely free of its sombre influence. The culmination of the picture is an intensely dramatic climax staged by the wronged scientist in an eflorl to save the girl be loves from an existence worse than death. The terrible vengeance lie calls down upon the nobleman who robbed him of a glorious future will stir nil who see it. The cast supporting the three principals is particularly strong, including I nliy -Marshal, .Marc McDermott, Ford Sterling, Clyde Cook and others. There is humour in the picture, which relieves its intense drama, mainly to he found in the circus scenes in the company of a flock ol clowns, whose oxcollenl I downing reflects the infinite pains I taken by Director Soastrom to secure absolute realism. “Ho Who Gets Slapped ” is one of those pictures I everybody wants to see, so make sure ] hy booking early at the Princess Iheatre, where the picture will be shown to-night. A topical and comedy complete the programme.
