It was claimed on behalf of the Royal Mail Hotel at I.’aeroa that although the house was no longer existent. the license was the oldest in Paeroa, having originidlv been located at Puke. The applicant, Mrs C. V. Crosby, said tho license was at Puke before the Maoris allowed white people to conic to what is now ' known as Paeroa. On behalf of the Criterion Hotel, Paeron, it was stated that the license dated from the earliest days of the goldfields. Mr E. •!• Clenden asserted that the first license of the Commercial Hotel. Paere.'i, w as housed about oft years ago in a building about 100 yards Iron) the present premises. ‘'l thought 1 represented the oldest license in Paeron.’ he said, “hut others have made the claim. I can say, however, that it goes hack to the flood.” A murmur of tnstonishment greeted this claim and counsel hastened to explain that he meant the Ohinemnri flood, the big flood Which occurred about 50 years ago. and the explanation was received with laughter. Counsel for one of the Wailii applicants .sought to repair his disadvantage by asserting that he laid no claim of antiquity, which, after all. probably suggested buildings which had long since outlived their period of usefulness, and Jio longer had claims to consideration.
