i- MIDDLESEX MATCH. [Reuter Telegrams.] LONDON, May 29. o F o r the cricket match, Australians - v. Middlesex, at Lords, the weather - was fine and warm with a cool bronze. ' j The attendance was thirty thousand, ■ the wicket was hard. Collins won the • toss and elected to hat. The Au.s- ---! Indians omitted Mailev, Richardson, Ponsford. Eilis and Hendry. ' j llaig and Durston wen? the opening howlers. The start was’slow due not only to natural care, but Durston was bowling short balls rising dangerously. | Bardsley was safer than 'Woodful, fol- | lowing the ball more accurately. He I bit three excellent fours in the first I quarter of an hour. Durston persistI ed in tempting him with long hops j on offside (lie persistently declined to nibble at them). Runs came freely from Haig. Macartney opened brightly, scoring quickly off Haig and Tanner whose length was uncertain. Allen made an excellent start with the ball, having Macartney guessing twice in the first over. Both batsmen obtained pretty boundaries past point, Macartney also scoring from glances to leg. Stevens varied his attack. The fielding generally was poor. Macartney "as brilliantly held at the third slip by Tanner. He hit six fours in his innings, which wrs characterised by good scoring shots nil round the wicket". With the assistance of captain and vieo-captain ih,e scoring slowed down considerably. When eight, Collins gave a difficult chance to Tanner high from Haig. Collins obtained runs more
easily than usual. Bardsley continued to he attractive, lie-gained many runs in front of the wicket and was excellent in finding the open spots. He went out trying to turn a ball from Hearn© to leg. His score included eight fours. The total then was 3 for 151.
Andrews, before ho opened his score had a very lucky escape. He cocked up a hall between the howler and midon ; neither attempted to reach it. He then stepped out to, the bowling and cut well and also hooked cleanly.
Ta unci' with an obvious break action ..presented no difficulties. The bowling was changed frequently. Hurston kept a good - pace, but his length was short. Collins declined ball after ball. Andrews when Cl had an uncomfortable ovfer from Haig. He survived appeals for l.b.w. and stumping. Collins after 2d minutes without scoring got Hurston away to boundary with a leg glance which to-day was one of his few scoring strokes. Andrews opened his shoulders, driving Haig to tlfe on and cutting him nicely, scored 4—2—4 in one over. When 8G he was dean howled by a no-ball from Allen. Ho later stepped out to a no ball from the same bowler and was bowled again. Botli batsmen began to bit more freely, putting Tanner spectacularly to the boundary. Andrews reached his century in 125 minutes. Collins approaching his hundred was patient and refused to take opportunities. Then an excellent cut from Haig was magnificently held by Tanner low down. He halted 105 minutes and hit seven fours. The board now read 34(5 for 4. Andrews continued magnificently. He drove powerfully all round. Tie had hitherto scored 10 fours.
During the afternoon rain twice interrupted play.
