WESTLAND COMPETITIONS SOCIETY.

A meeting was held at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock last evening, to constitute the above Society. There was not a very numerous attendance, but several apologies were received for absence, and promising cooperation. Mr D. J. Evans occupied the chair. The report of the sub-committee (already published] was submitted, considered clause lay clause and adopted with minor amendments.

The officers were appointed as l'ol lows:—

Patron.—Hon. 11. L. Michel, M.L_C President.—Air I). J. Evans. V ice-Presidents.—Revd, Dr Kennedy, and Revd. G. Knowles-Sinith. Executive Committee.—. Messrs Partridge, Pratt, Con Ison, Lynn and Pilkington. Hon. Secretary.—Mr J. AV. Morris. Hon. Treasurer.—Mr J. Conning.

The dates for the Competitions wore confirmed, namely .Monday, August 23, at the Town Hall; Tuesday, August 2!, at the Princess Theatre. These dates are at the opening of the next term holidays. It was resolved to communicate with Messrs R . T. Bush (GreynioTith), Eric Moss (Greyinouth) and J. Barrowmau (Ruatapu) with regard to the .judging

of the elocutionary, musical and (laming sections respectively. The question of selecting pieces par competition was referred to the Executive which is to meet as early as convenient, and arrange for the issue

of the book of words. Rules for the coinnetilioii, it. v ;is decided, might he modelled as fur i'.s possible on the lines of those for the Greymuuth competition, which will tall to he held a week after the Hokitika competition.

The subscription was fixed us l.;l----lows, juveniles 2s, adults os and family ticket 7s (id. The subscription include free admission to all sessions ol the competitions during the year. AYitli reference to prizes, the matter was referred to the Executive to decide. The opinion was expressed that several prizes might he offered by well-wishers. Li that connection, the Revd. Knowles-Smith donated a special prize, value half a guinea, to he allocated by the Executive. The question of holding a summer out-door display for juveniles was suggested by Dr Kennedy, to include dems of massed drill, etc. The suggestion was generally approved and referred to the Executive. Various matters of detail were discussed and the meeting adjourned sine die.
