The simplification, of the inspection of immigrants on hoard ship, was the chief subject discussed at the Internal ional Labour Conference, which opened yesterday morning. There was clear indication that certain interested States were desirous of tho adoption of a convention on the subject, despite the fact that only eleven out of the fifty members approvingly replied to' a questionnaire. The representatives of Britain intimated that a convention was undesirable, and also outside the competence of the* Labour Office. Director Thomas replied that the delegates only expected to lay down rules for the purpose of simpliflying the inspection, and avoiding the duplication of disputes, which hitherto had heen very evident.
