In connection with our report of the complimentary gathering tendered to Mr and Mrs Dulf on Wednesday an omission occurred. Regarding the announcement of the lecture on New Zealand War Memorials for next Tuesday night, the Undersecretary of the Department of Internal Affairs wired as follows last night: “ Regret now advised by Mr Hurst Soager impossible at all events at present to give the lecture as proposed at Hokitika. Will advise you later whether possible to hold lecture at subsequent date. (Signed).—J. Hislop.”
The Westland County Council is calling for tenders for the construction of 40 chains of the Kuinam-Kapitea road to peg 2 miles 2d chains. Tenders close at noon on Tuesday, Bth June. The section of the road now to he constructed will carry the formation of the road practically to the Kapiton Creek crossing and so link ip with tho Chesterfield railway station on the Grey-Mokitika line.
The Returned Soldiers’ Euchre Tournament will be continued in the Slodiers’ I-lall this (Friday) evening at 8 o’clock sharp. First prize, 48-pieee dinner set, second prize 21-piece tea set, third prize,- set of fancy jugs, fourth prize, half-dozen cups and saucers. A reminder is given of the public meeting at the County Chambers this evening at 7.30 o’clock to organise tho Westland Competitions Society. The meeting will consider the report (already published) from the sub-commit-tee, and oil adopting the same proceed with the election of officers and the general arrangements for the first competitions to he held in August' next. As the movement is such a worthy one in the interests of the rising generation a well-attended meeting -is hoped for so that the project may he launched with all possible enthusiasm.
In urging a study of New Zealand’s fuel resources. Sir Frank Heath touched an enlightening industrial factor. “The expenditure of heat in industry.” lie said, “is oil the average much higher than the expenditure of power, and that electricity is an expensive source of heat, which is not economically justified unless the factory is putting out products of very high grade or requires the application of heat under very accurate control or in closely defined areas. This is one reason why Norway, though possessed of cheap electric power, has not developed into a great manufacturing country. She is destitute of fuel resources, for which there must always he a demand in industrial operations.”

Yesterday morning’s train from Hokitika developed engine trouble, and oid not reach Greyinouth till 10.55 o’clock, forty minutes late. The outward bound express left at 11.5 o’clock, half, an hour late.
The remains "of t tie victim of the drowning fatality in the Kokatalii river on Sunday, 16th inst. are being taken to Christchurch for interment. The name of the young man is not Cyril as previously stated but Joseph William Sylvester Smith. He was 20 years of age.
Trappers of opossums are notified in this issue that traps of poison or any device dangerous to the public must not tie placed on any County road reserve. Notice is given also that permission will not he given to trap on the road reserves within the Westland County because of the danger and risk to the public.
