“THE SPOILERS ” —TO-NIGHT. William Farnum was tlio guest of Jesse D. Hampton, film producer, at the first public review of “ The Spoilers,’' at Glendale, California. When Colonel Selig, one of the pioneers of the motion picture game, produced Rex Reach’s epic of Alaska more than ten years ago, Farnum played the leading part, that of Roy Glennistcr. The picture was a world-wide success and so was Farnum. In every walk of life theatregoers still talk o'f the fight in “ The Spoilers,” between Farnum and Tom Suntsehi. Farnum, a giant of a man, sat next to the producer during the screening of the picture that comes to the Princess Theatre. Several times as the audience applauded loudly ho gripped the producer by the hand. His emotion was plain •to he seen as lie watched the picture that, when first produced, brought him fame and fortune. Upon leaving the little theatre, the actor seized Wilton Sills, who interprets the role of Glennister in the new version and congratulated him. “.Marvellous, immense,” he said. “It is the greatest picture I have ever seen. I would have given ten years of my life to have played the part again.” “The prime requisite of any great motion picture is a great setting. Great hooks, great paintings, great songs, are inspired by great events,” declared Jesse D. Hampton, motionpicture producer, in explaining why he chose as a photoplay theme, Rex Reach’s novel, “The Spoilers.” “The Klondike Gold Rush,” Mr Hampton went on, “was one of the greatest events in American history. It. developed powerful figures and produced untold fortunes. Thus, it is logical that the event should bring forth one of. the most powerful stories in literature 1 The Spoilers.’ Rex Reach’s novel is one of the best written in recent years. Tt is based on an historical incident, and it portrays, as does no other work, the great Alaskan gold rush. Furthermore, it did more than any other thing to stop the political ‘ spoilers ’ from wresting the rich gold mines from their rightful owners. 1 The Spoilers ’ was Rex Reach’s first and most successful novel, and it deserves a picture where modern-day equipment, technique and photography can do it justice.”
