'The death took place at Westport on Saturday of Mr D. Jacobs, a former resident of Hokitika, who for a number of years was engaged in business as a fancy goods dealer in the shop now conducted by Afr A. Yarrall. Deceased was a native of Poland, and 73 years of age. He had resided for many years on the Coast. Previously lie was in business in Australia, and also in Sail Francisco, where he suffered severely through the big earthquake in 1906. At various times he was in business in Auckland, Hokitika and Westport. He is survived by a. widow, a son, Afr Phil Jacobs (Auckland), a daughter Airs F. Huddlestone (Westport) and numerous grandchildren.

Seated in his chair before his wireless hoard on Saturday night at Dunedin a- young man, aged twenty-four, had a terrifying experience, which has left him with a badly burned hand and shock. The death was announced at Wellington on Sunday qf Air George Guide Schwartz, aged seventy-two, architect, who was well known throughout the Dominion as an excellent- musician, lie as one of the founders of the ‘Wellington Orchestral Society. At tlie inquest concerning the death of John Evans, the victim of the Alillerton mine fatality on Alay 20th, a verdict of accidental death was returned. During the course of the proceedings Air E. Lock, President of the Alillerton Miners’ Union, raised the point that the jury as constituted, did not meet the requirements of the Coal Alines Act, which provides that half the jurymen should, if practicable, he miners. It was found, however, that two of the jurymen had worked in coal mines over half a lifetime, whilst two others had had experience in mines at one time or another. After the point had been discussed, at some length, the Coroner, Afr E. R. Fox. ruled that the jury complied sufficiently with the requirements of the Act, and tlie inquest proceeded.
