Every boy glories in having a “den” rR hjis own. d this desire is intensified when these irrepressible spirits congregate as Scouts. The announced intention of the authorities to demolish certain of the old government buildings in the vicinity of the County Office will deprive the local Scout Troops of a meeting place which they have occupied for a. considerable time past. This necessitates those supporting this work among the boys looking for other quarters, and to this end a meeting of parents and friends of the Scouts, together with the Troop Committee, is being held to-night at 8 o’clock in the County Chambers. Several places, we understand, are in view hut in each case a certain amount will be required over and above the modest sum the boys themselves have in hand and “ ways and means ” as well as choice of site is to he discussed. Everv one who has an inclination to help boys who are trying to help themselves, will be welcome at to-night’s meeting, as indicating goodwill at least towards the local share in this world wide movement to help produce better citizens. The procuring of a permanent meeting place by purchase might well he considered. to serve also for the Girt Guides, a branch of which has been so enthusiastically formed recently. Such ail effort would not he at all too ambitious and requires only a little combination and enthusiasm.

The English howling team on arrival home in England made very many generous tributes to the hospitality extended throughout their tour, They have also recounted many amusing incidents. It is recorded that at social gatherings Scottish songs appeared to be the favourites, and were on the programme at every gathering. It was after one of these nights that a member of the hotel staff came up to the party’s rooms in the morning and asked if No. 27 was there. “Yes,” shouted the howler, who happened to occupy that particular room. “Well, I am sorry, sir,” came the rather halting reply, “but your boots are not cleaned. You put your bowls out instead of your shoes last night.” Another raconteur stated he was surprised at the number of Scotsmen who had attained the chief civic dignity in the various centres, especially in New Zealand. The Scottish members of the team received a nasty set-back, howver, when on arriving at one town, one of them remarked with a pardonable degree of pride: “I see you have a number of Scotsmen here.” “Yes, hut the rabbits are still our greatest enemies,” was the rejoinder, i and the . Scots had perforce to join in the laugh at their own expense.
