INDIANS BEAT TARANAKI. fBY TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION KLTHAM. May 20. Before an attendance of 3000 at Taumnta Park this afternoon, the Indian Army Hockey team played the Taranaki reps, winning hv seven goals to two. Rain fell throughout 1 '.natch, and the ground was very soft, the players finding a difficulty in maintaining a foothold. It was a splendid expositor! of hockey, and at times the spectators,- wore roused to great enthusiasm. The vistors’ combination and condition told its tale in the second half. The play opened sensationally. the visitors scoring from the bully off, Dhinn Ghand’s shot finding the goal. Taranaki immediately attacked, prior to evening up the score. Dhian Chain! scored shortly before half-time, and again 'twice in succession in the second spell, making the score four to one. Captain Bellchamber .shot a splendid goal from a good combined rush. From'a melee in front of the visitors’ goal, Irwin (Taranaki) netted amid great applause. Susaina then added to the visitors’ score immediately afterwards, and Bellehnmber scored a second goal before time. Mr 11. G. Johnston, of Stratford, and Mr AA r . IT. Down (Christchurch), refereed. The outstanding home players Avere T. .Bennie, Briggs, Desforges and Page (hacks'), whose defence prevented several goals. The forwards were an even lot. but were outplayed. Ghulman Ali (goal) played a wonderful defensive game. Besides tlie scorers, Captain Gowan and Faqur Ghand were most prominent among the visitors, who say this was the hardest game of the tour so far. The visitors arrived from Marten from a civic reception. They were entertained later. Dhian Singh broke his right hand early in the match.
