The atteiidnnde at the cricket was eight thousand. Ryder and Richardson kept the Cambridge batsmen on the defensive and runs came slowly, twenty-eight taking eighty-five minutes 1 to compile. Enthoven livened the game up. hitting out freely and sending both howlers to the boundary. He and Dawson were the mainstays of the local batting. They kept their wickets intact’ but scored few runs in the earlier play. In the afternoon Enthoven. by way of contrast, drove, pulled and cut with the utmost freedom, testing the fielding severely. At one stage he put on twenty-five in fifteen minutes and his score included eight fours. Australia opened poorly. Collins badly mistimed a ball from Afeyer and was out. Bardsley was never happy and twice cocked a ball from Enthoven up dangerously. Macartney imparted some life into the game, driving vigorously, but the fielding was very keen. Alaeartney and AVoodfull forced the game and attempted some sharp singles until brought up by excellent fielding, notably that of Robbins. AAoodfull had a narrow escape from being run out, while Alacartney survived two appeals. for leg before and a catch in the same] over.
