SPY CASE ENDS. PARIS, May IS. There was an unexpected ending to the spy case (cabled on the 7th and 9th December last), in which several men, including three policemen, were arrested in connection with alleged espionage efforts to obtain details of the French Air Service discoveries. Spying was alleged to have been done by a woman (Marcelle Marseil), who had ingratiated herself with the aviation officials descending from aeroplanes with parachutes. John Henry Leather, a native of Yorkshire, but living in Paris, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined three thousand francs. Ernest Oliver Phillips, a former N.C.O. in the British army, and ■ William Fischer, a naturalized Englishman, were sentenced to two years and fined two thousand francs. Tho two girls. Moreuil and Lefebre received two months each. The Judge, in a half hour review of the ease, cited the documents seized with lists of the names of flying officers and payments made to the girls, also to the fact that Leather was actually in the Intelligence Service during the war. He described Leather’s employment at tho aerodrome and the fact that tho man was undoubtedly spying. The tribunal ruled that Leather was the leader, and the others accomplices. Moreuil claimed exemption from punishment because she had denounced the lenders, and the Judge said she should be acquitted if the law was strictly observed but the tribunal decided otherwise.
