HOBART. Alay 17. A little boy, named Langley was knocked down by a ear and killed. HOBART. May 17. Alderman E. P. Rogers was elected Mayor in succession to F. 1) Valentine. - ENGINE DRIVERS’ STRIKE. (Received this dav at 10.25 a.-m.) SYDNEY, Alay 18. Uncompleted developments in tho coal mine engine-drivers’ strike occurred when the miners employees of Sydney Collieries Limited, which had acceded to Hie claim of the enginedrivers refused to resume unless the maangement gave them the same increase as they had undertaken to concede to the engine drivers. This demand the owners refused. The miners at a later meeting decided to resume this morning, but whether they will remain at work is to be decided by a Federation meeting to-day. In addition the carpenters, bricklayers, painters, tile layers, and builders’ labourers are demanding a forty
hour week. They claim this basis on the ground that they were enjoying a forty-hour week when other unions were working forty-eight.
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH LAW. SYDNEY, alay 18. The Presbyterian Assembly adopted an overture presented by Rev. Dr Burgess for making it legal under the Presbyterian Church law for a woman to marry her deceased husband’s brother. MAN ROASTED TO DEATH. ADELAIDE. Alay 18. George Newman, (71), was found suspended from, a pot hook over a kitchen fire roasted to death. Evidently befell forward and his coat caught on tho hook during a lit to which he was subject.
FIRE AT AIELBOURNE. -MELBOURNE, May IS. A fire almost completely destroyed the freezing works of W. and R. Fletcher Proprietary Limited tit Geelong, the oldest established works in the district. The damage is estimated at £35,000. EFFECT OF ENGINE DRIVERS’ STR IKE. (Received this day at 11.0 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Alay IS. The effect of tile engine drivers’ strike on the coal fields is beginning to be felt. Six colliers and a number of small inter-State steamers are already tied up.
