KOKATAHI FATALITY

C ECIL SMITH MISSING. It was reported to the Police last evening that a young . man. Cecil Smith, aged about 19 years, who came to the district in September lust, from Christchurch, was missing and it is feared lie is drowned.

It appears that yesterday afternoon Mr A\'. Diedrich with Smith was engaged in cutting out cattle on the Kokatnlii river bed between the old ford and the Kokatahi bridge. A number of cattle were cut out, and Smith was left in charge to hold them, .vhilo Diedrich went further on. Coining back about half an hour later (about 5 D.m.) Mr Diedrich saw the cattle on one side of the river and on crossing to the island found the horse the missing man had been riding, but no ‘.race of the rider. A search was made without effect and then the alarm was given. and search parties went out. but without finding any trace. There are some very bad places in the river in this locality and the general fear is that the young man lias been drowned. The search is being continued this morning.
