TERM HONORS LIST. PRESENTATION OF FOOTBALL SHIELD. The scholars of the Hokitika School falling in for the afternoon session yesterday at 1.30 p.m. marched to the front of the School adjacent to the flagpole where the usual Friday afternoon ceremony of saluting the flag took place, term honors list was announced and representatives of the Westland Sub-Union presented the Shield won by the School Primary team to the Captain of the team to hold for the year. Prior to the honors fist being announced Air Partridge (Rector) addressed the scholars stating that as Ihe term holidays were to commence from that afternoon he wished to draw their attention to a number of matt' ■ These included a request against the destruction of native birds of the hush, and a. warning against the. breaking of insulators on telephone and telegraph lines, which besides causing considerable loss was liable to cause serious damage and injury. Mr Partridge then called upon the representatives of the Westland Sub--1 nion present. Messrs !’. McGregor .Chairman). E. W. Ileetian (secretary). ■I. -1. Breeze anil D. It. Dowell, to make the presentation of the -Shield. The Shield is a very handsome one presented by the Rugby Unions of Hu I Iff. Inangahua, Grey and Westland for competition annually among the primary schools of the West Coast, the two winners being 1924—-Westport, 192-")—Hokitika.
.Mr F. McGregor said as the representative of the West Coast Rugby Unions ho had very great pleasure al being there that afternoon to present the very handsome shield won by the school primary team. In doing so he congratulated the team on their success. Not only last year hut on all occasions they played good football. He trusted that they would at all times play the game. At ihe call of Mr Partridge the Captain of tile school team (Malcolm Davidson) canto forward. and on behalf of the Rugby football authorities of the Coast Air -McGregor presented the trophy, congratulating the team on their success last year and expressing the hope that they would he able to hold the handsome trophy for many years. At Air AlcGregor’s call cheers wore given for the winning team. Air If. R. Sweney (Chairman of the School Committee) then addressed the scholars, stating it gave him greatpleasure to -see the presentation of the trophy to the winners of the primary schools competition. Ho was glad to know that they had been successful, and hoped they would continue their host efforts. The win had been a popular one as it was recognised the school team always played good football and whether they won or lost they should play the game through life at football !
and other sports. He congratulated the primary team on their success. The Rector thanked the members of the Rugby Union for their attendance that afternoon and also the members of the School Committee present. Addressing the scholars be hoped that they would try to win modestly, and to lose cheerfully. SALUTING THE FLAG.
The ceremony of saluting the flag which is carried out every Friday afternoon. followed, two members of (lie school primary team being honored by allowing them to haul the. flag into position. The scholars then came to the salute, and the Aationat Anthem was then sung. This completed the ceremony and the scholars were marched off in charge of their respective teachers. TERM HOLIDAYS. Later in the afternoon the school was dismissed, the term holiday of two weeks, conuneneing on ALondny.
