FLOOD DAMAGE.

At Greymouth last evening the Grey river was reported to bo within a foot of the top of the wharf. The firebell rang out an alarm at 10.30 p.m. to notify the business people of the dangler. All the lowlving parts' of the town were under water. After 11 p.m. the Hood gradually dropped. Up country the reports of floods and damage show it was severe. In the vicinity of Xgahere much damage was done. It was stated the Power Station at Dobson was under water. The Omoto racecourse was completely under water.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Band, which 16ft Greymouth in Newman’s cars, yesterday morning, intending to give a programme last night at Westport, could not get-as- far as Ahaura, as a dozen yards of the road had during the night been washed out, while several chains of it further on were under water,-causing a traffic hold. up. The Band had to return to Greymouth and their visits to Westport. Nelson and Blenheim, had then to be cancelled, as they have to catch a boat for England at an early date. The Band this morning left by tbe express for Christchurch. THE RAILWAYS.

The heavy rain did not greatly hamper the railways, there being but one small slip near Kaimata, but the electrical signalling apparatus on the Midland line was affected, and the overland trains were somewhat delayed in consequence. The trains on this side all-fan to time.

There was a heavy downpour in the country yesterday and about 2 o’clock a very heavy flood came down tbe river, which was bank high until a late hour last night and then started to subside. The Kokatahi road was under water yesterday afternoon and some difficulty was experienced in getting through, but after a hold up for a couple of hours, tbe water fejl sufficiently to allow of motor traffic. So far no material damage lias' been reported.
