AGAINST V HAMPSHI RE. ißecei.'od this day at 8 a.m.i LONDON, May 12. The weather is fine and wicket sliglitly damp for the start of the Australians match against Hampshire. Collins won the toss and batted. LONDON, April 12. The teams for the Hampshire match are Australia omit- Woodful, Richardson. Hendry, Oldfield, Grimmett. I Hampshire:—Aird, Brufton, Gross, Hill, Mead, Brown, Kennedy, Newman, Rowell, Livesey, Bovcs. The weather was inclined to he showery. Australia opened quietly. The howlers required watching hut were not troublesome. Collins gave two chances at the wicket in the early stages oif Newman. Bardsley played a characteristic innings, showing sound defence and punished loose halls, hut was somewhat unhappy when facing the slow left-hander, Roves. When the total reached fifty rain interfered for a quarter of an hour, and on the resumption the batsmen were not assertive. After lunch they found Kennedy difficult and were uncomfortable. Collins when 31 survived a strong appeal for leg before and in the next over he was nearly stumped. Bardsley all through was uneasy, though good on leg strokes.
Macartney survived two appeals, the first at the first hall for a catch at the wicket and the next ball for l.b.w. Then lie returned Ills third hall lamely to Kennedy. Collins followed him in the next over. He had played patiently and safely. Taylor and Pons ford were more lively. drove forcefully and exhibited beautiful carpet drives. Gross, the reputed googlv ex|X>neut. and Roves, both slow howlers, wore punished severely, runs being scored off almoost every ball, mainlv from drives.
Ponsford succumbed through leaving an off hall, which broke eighteen inches. Andrews and Taylor were dashing, the latter indulging in some powerful drives.
Taylor was confident and spectacular and drove cleanly. His wrist work was splendid. He fell a victim to the first delivery with a new hall after the second century, alter having batted for 8.5 minutes, hitting six fours. Gregory opened in a lively manner with three fours off Newman and continued to score by boundaries with drives for four and six and three more fours, reaching the century with a six, in seventy-five minutes. Ho then followed up with a third sixer off Roves. The Hampshire fielding was good. (Received this day at 11.0 a.in.) LONDON, May 12. AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
