Some surprise was expressed that the Christchurch mails which were due here on Saturday, did not arrive till this morning. An enquiry elicited the information that for some reason flic mails were not despatched from Christchurch on Saturday. Passengers, however, who left Christchurch on Saturday were able to get through. .It'is quite unusual to find such a lack of enterprise on Hie part of the Postal authorities and it is to be hoped in simila r circumstances arrangements will be made to push the mails through. It is customary for the Hokitika-Otira motor service to meet all trains at Otira and by giving the instructions necessary mails can be got through. It is hoped this hint will reach the proper quarter and similar delay in important postal matter avoided in the future. However, the blunder of Saturday was repeated yesterday when the mails for Hokitika instead of being despatched from Christchurch bv tlie special express were sent forward by goods train. Evidently the express passed the goods train on route, for the latter did not reach Greymouth till last evening and the train in here arrived minus the mails. This dual muddle with the local mails calls for an enquiry in the hope that such a stupid condition of affairs will not recur. The delay is very vexatious to many and the cause seems to lie attributed to the lack of foresight on the part of the Christchurch costal officials.
