The minutes were confirmed and oiltward correspondence approved.

INWARD. CORRESPONDENCE. From AA’estland Racing Club asking for permission to remove 100 loads of sand from AA’hitcombe Square for topdressing purposes; enquiring as to tho cost of asphalting the ground around the toralisator house, using the Council’s plant and staff,—Received; first request agreed to subject to approval of site by Overseer; the Chairman of Public AA'orks and Overseer to report as to cost of second request.

From T. AA\ Barrowman, drawing attention to state of footpath arid roadway in Upper Sale Street. —Received; referred to Public AVorks Committee for attention.

From N.Z. Refrigerating Coy, Christchurch, notifying nine sheep had been sent to Hokitika, during April.—Re-

ceived: From Airs A. Kavanagh risking for transfer of Aluiiicipal lease to the Sisters of Alercy.—Received and agreed to. ...

From Park arid Murdoch asking consent to transfer of lease of Municipal reserve from Airs Shannon to her two sons.—Received and agreed to. From AA’estland Hospital Board > notifying annual levy struck, the Couiicil’s shale being £709 Is Id.—Received.

From Hokitika School Committee asking the Council to asphalt the footpath near the monument and clear away the blackberries.—Received and referred to Public AA’orks Committee to attend to when the weather was suitable.

From Free Public Library Committee drawing attention to leaks in roof of library.—Recevied. A discussion took place as to the best course to ho followed. The question was then referred to the Public AA’orks Committee. From Miss A. Stapleton, Secretary, of Ladies’ Hockey Club, applying for use,of No 2 playing ground in Cass Square for hockey purposes.—Received ; it was resolved to reply the Council had no objection to tho Club using the area. From T. B. Baty, applying for use of 4-inch drain from his premises, AVeld Street.—Received and request -granted subject to payment of half tlie cost of the work.

From same applying for permission to erect a petrol pump nad petrol store in his new building.,—Received; request granted Subject to -regulations, the question of fees for petrol to be arranged by the Cduiieii later. From P. J. Kirwan asking for permission to erect a petrol puriip lit bis premises.—Received and request granted subject to payment of fee to be rivrang ed by the Council later. From L. Gooch forwarding locality plan for petrol pump erection.—Received and granted on the same conditions as above. From H. Dunn ; asking for connection to water supply near reservoir.— Received and request refused.

REPORTS. The Treasurer reported receipts £lB3 11s 9d. payments £531 6s lOd, credit balance £64 Is lid. loan account credit balance £l7l 13s od.—Received. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £399 11s 3d, and that tho request of tho Beautifying Association to bo relieved of forii* months’ contribution be agreed to and that the gardener be given one months’ A* notice of termination of his engagement.—Received and adopted. From Alannger of Abattoirs (AD J. Jarman) reporting for month of April there were examined 19 cows, 55 heifers, 43 bullocks, 212 sheep, 57. lambs, 19 pigs, 25 calves. Condemned 1 cow, 1 sheep. Fees for period £73 15s 6d (£77 S)s 6d last year).—Received.

(Air Parry took his seat.) FOREMAN’S REPORT. I beg to report the following works have been carried out during the month of April. During the first week of the month we were engaged repairing the damage caused by the flood which -occurred during the end of the previous month. Cemetery Hill which was badly scoured was repaired and Hampden Street between Bealey and Fitzherbort Streets, was also scoured which we repaired, fifteen feet of Bealey Street drain near Gibson’s Quay collapsed and was renewed .

On Tuesday 6th wo went out along the pipe line repairing leaks and again on the Bth n-jblow out having occurred at Tucker Flat. We also repaired several leaks about tile town, chiefly in Hampden Street and Gibson’s- Quay. On the 12th we started and formed 31- chains of footpath and gravelled it on the north end of Sewell Street, also laying 40ft. of one-foot- concrete pipes connecting the drain across the road and footpath. Wo put in three extra 18in. pipes under the footpath in Jollie Street which was washed out recently, and twenty extra pipes in Davie Street near Davies Bros. Brewery, also fortyfive one-foot pipes were put in at Kirwan’s corner in .Sewell Street and the crossing gravelled. . A crossing was put in to Mrs Folley’s property in Park Street and a water connection to the gasworks, the gorso was grubbed out of Fiteherbert Street on the east side of the railway yard, and a quantity of gravel was put in the Weld Street railway crossing. During the month we made concrete pipes and ten 18in. pipes. F. TV. CHESTER MAN, Foreman. —Received. It was resolved to enquire as to the cost of 2) feet moulds for concrete pipes. The Public Works Committee was authorised to renew the horse trough at the Weld Street junction with Revell Street. Mr Parry asked attention be given to the footpath in Brittain Street between Wold and Stafford Streets and Mr Coulson for some gravel in Sale Street between Stafford and Hampden Streets. The Council rose at 9 p.m.
