DIFFICULT OPERATIONS. FAIRBANKS, May 2,
Later details of Smith’s overland journey to Barrow show the party suffered severe hardships owing to the intense cold and shortness of food. Of sixty-eight dogs, with which they started only fifteen wore alive on reaching Barrow. Many died of hunger and others were so weak that they were shot to end their misery. In view of the difficulties so far encountered, Wilkins is considering a reorganisation of tho arrangements for conveying stores to the. base and carrying out the general plans of the expedition.

Considerable improvement in the operating position of the Government merchant murine is .shown in the annual report tabled in the Commons to-day. The operating loss has been reduced according to the report by 492,826 dollars or 24.20 per cent, compared with 1924. despite the serious depression in shipping business during 1925.
