NF.AV YORK MILK SCARE. NEAY YORK, May 1. The milk scandal in New York, reference to which was cabled oil April 18th., is growing in scope. The Commissioner of Health, Dir Harris, lias announced that milk watered with stable hoses is responsible for a large proportion of the annual typhoid cases in New York which terminate fatally. A'arious city institutions have discovered so much bad milk and cream being supplied to them that they are compelled to' institute their own inspection system. The Secretary of the Previous Health Comissiouer, who was indicted l>y a givuitl jury charge on 95.000 dol. bail, and the leader of a gang who practiced extortion among dishonest dealers lias pleaded guilty, and await sentence. The present New York State Law requires a three per cent, of butter fat content in milk, and the dishonest wholesalers formed a ring declining to purchase milk from any dairyman with three per cent., preferring a cheaper product, and thus forcing many unwilling dairymen to adulterate their milk.
