EXPEDITION. WASHINGTON, .April 29. Secretary Wilbur has received a personal radio from Commander Byrd today, saving that the Arctic Expedition ship Chanticr, - will reach Spitsbergen by Friday. OSLO. April 29. The Byrd Polar Expedition, mentioned in a cable on April 20th., has .arrived at King’s Bay, in Spitsbergen, in the ship Chantier. She carries two aeroplanes, with which it is intended to fly to the Pole to form a base four hundred miles away. INCOME TAX EVASION. ST. JOHN’S Newfoundland) April 29 Sir Richard Squires, the former Premier of Newfoundland, w|is found guilty to-day on a charge of breach of the War Tax Act, in failing to submit income tax returns for 1918. He was fined three hundred dollars. Sir Richard Squires has already been fined four thousand dollars on similar charges, and fresh trials are to follow on six charges, covering the years from 1919 to 1924. FRENCH FINANCE. NEW YORK, April 30. Despito the agreement reached at Washington to'fund the French Debt, the franc continued to-day to hover around the record low level, dealings being made at 3.28 cents, while a sympathetic' reaction carried Belgians francs down to a new minimum price for the year of 3.30. French bonds, however* reflected a favourable response to the settlement.
