The heavy rainfall yesterday had the effect at Moana of hampering the work of repairing the washout on the Midland line at the 21-ntilo peg, between Kotnku and Moana, which lias increased in size, being now no less than 18 feet decj) and 30 feet across. Reports last night indicated that the wash-out was .still widening; hut it was not anticipated that the trains would he held up entirely. The original cause of the trouble was the collapse of a small culvert running under the line. Passengers and mails on both inward and outward expresses yesterday had to he transhipped over the damaged section of line, fo join waiting trains. The express from Christchurch ran straight through to Otira, putting down the Coast hound passengers, and picking up the East bound passengers there. There were few outward passengers and the time lost in transhipment "Its comparatively slight. The inward express, however, carried 180 passengers, the majority of whom were for Grcynioutli and Hokitika, and consequently the train was delayed for some time, while the luggage was carried to the waiting train, which arrived in Greymouth one hour and 50 minutes late, and the train did not arrive in Hokitika till 8.15 p.m.
Chatting with .Mr L. Ross, the wellknown Xew Zealand golf professional, ;a ‘‘Guardian” reporter, inter alia, questioned him a.s to his pupils and as to the pupils he liked best. His opinion was that the players who are keen on the game,, and anxious to improve, the type that are anxious to know the whys and wherefores, and those who are not afiuid to ask questions as to why they are told to do this, that and the other are the best pupils, and are likely to become good players. ‘‘l have a pupil in mind” he. eontTnued. "who from the first realised that the game was difficult so, as such, he set about it. . flight away he decided to tackle the game from the very beginning. He took lessons once a week ; the rest of his time was spent in practising with one club at a time'and occasionally bo would come along and have a chat about bis .shots. This pupil is now in credit to me and has reduced his handicap to six. .Most of my pupils—l don’t suppose I am alone in this—become disgruntled if they are unable, alter a few lessons, to hit every drive straight down the middle. They can’t understand it. As likely a.s not they come to the conclusion that I have misled them—quite wrongly of course! M hy do most beginners adopt this attitude? They would not expect to Ikable to play the piano after two or three lessons, but they expect to be able to play golf. No. give me the ■pupil who treats the game with the respect it demands; in time these will lie good players, and everlastingly thankful for the pains they have taken to improve their game. Golf is not on any account to he treated casuallv.”
