The Grey “Argus” says:—“A mild epidemic of diphtheria is occurring in Orcyrnouth at present. While the eases on the wholo are not dangerously ill, many of them have been characterised by profound weakness and in these eases it has usually been found that the patient has not been seen by a doctor until the sore throat has existed about three days. It is only by early examination and treatment of sore throats that fatal eases can he avoided. Thus parents and guardians should have all children who complain of sore throats examined as soon as complaint is made.

An Auckland lady has, however, been thus favoured by the goddess of luck. The “Star ” relates that, bathing on -Milford beach one stortnv day in .March of last year, a big wave swept her off her feet, and, in regaining her balance, she swallowed a “ mouthful,” and lost her teeth. Friends bathing near were at onte apprised of the misfortune, and left no wave unturned to find the missing bicuspids. diving without success on the spot. When the tide receded, search parties raked about half an acre of the sands, but at length had to confess defeat and rely on the forlorn hope of newspaper advertisements, which brought no response, hut the lady had to buy a new masticating equipment. Tliis week, however, the missing gold plate was discovered still fit for service in a crevice at Black Rock, about half a mile from the spot where it was lost. Brief inquries soon found the owner, who now rejoices at this unexpected discovery of her dental treasures from the fickle sen.

The Westland Acclimatisation Society, which applied for an open season to take opossums in this district, has been advised by the Department of Internal Affairs that the recommendation ns to the opening and closing dates have been approved. Turley, who represented the Sawmill Employees’ Union, requested that in future he might bo notified when an inquest was to he held in respect to any fatality at a swaniill.
