“ THE TOMBOY,” TO-NIGHT.
That tlioso screen players who have had an extensive training in motion picture comedies know real dramatic values, and can still successfully put over humourous situations when the occasion arises, is the contention of TVahid Kirkland, director of “ The Tomhoy,” the new Chadwick picture playing at the Princess Theatre tonight. And in line with his ideas, it is only necessary to glance over the he selected for “ The Tomboy.” In the leading role wo find Dorothy Devore, the latest feature star from the ranks of Christie Comedies. Mi ss Devore was a featured comedienne of the Christies organisation for 5 years, and in that time gained a wide knowlogde of pantomime. Herbert Rawlin•son. who plays opposite Miss Devore, .lias been a star of the first magnitude for some years with his greatest achievements recorded in comedy dramas. I,ce Moran was one of the earliest of Universal comedians and, until lie deserted the short subject field a year ago for features, was starred in his own series. Harry Gribbon is-another of the early screen comedians, with years of stage experience behind his film work. James Barrows held sway as one of the foremost headline acts in vaudeville for nearly thirty years. while Lottie Williams is another old time stage favourite who deserted the footlights for the silent drama. As the result of Mier long experience as a star for Charles Blancy, she has accumulated a wide knowledge of both dramatic and comedy values. Perhaps the selection of a cast almost entirely composed of former comedy players, is the direct result of wide experience which David Kirkland has had in the direction of motion picture and stage (productions. In giving an explanation, Mr Kirkland claims, almost any actor can put over straight drama in a satisfactory manner, hut it requires players wih a sound foundation of comedy experience to obtain the utmost from a hmmirous situation in a film production.
A Topical comedy completes the programme to-night. On Wednesday next, “ The Hunted Woman” will he shown, and on Thursday next. Zane Grey’s master picture ‘‘The Thundering Head,” and Bonnie and Monty, vnudeville artists.
