[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] ECONOMY BILL. LONDON, April 22. ■ The House of Commons read the third time the Economy Bill by 328 votes to 138. Mr J. 11. Thomas, tho Labourite, summing up tho opposition, accused tho Government of, under the guise of economy, robbing fifteen million insured persons of tho money that was intended to- provide them with additional benefits. Air Churchill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, closing the debate pointed out that tho Government was providing £120,000,000 for social services, which was nine million more than the Labour Government deemed sufficient. These proposed economies, he said, were a few lucky survivors out of an immense number of proposals whereof tho majority were rejected after examination. The debate, he said, showed tho utter unreality of all the talk about economy by the Liberals and the Labourites-. Such was the astounding prosperity of the National Health Insurance Fund that an additional hallpenny on tho contributions even after these economies, would enable more than double the benefits to be given.
