WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE.
EXECUTIVE MEETING. The Executive met at the County Chambers at 4.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Present: —Messrs T. AA . Duff (President), AA’. Jeffries, T. V. Bruce, J. C. Macfarlnne, D. J. Evans, J. W. Morris and Dr Tcicliclmann. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. It was reported -Mr P. It. Clitnic represented tlie branch at the late conference at Dunedin, and that Mr AY. (loss had consented very kindly to represent the branch on the parent league at Christchurch. The Department of Industries forwarded an account for mounting photographs for the Exhibition.—Received and £lO passed for- payment. The Marine Department notified tliat the probable date for the visit of the s.s. Tutanokai to Jackson Bay was about August 10. sailing from the Bluff. It was'resolved to arrange the inspection ol the Jackson Bay settlement about that time.
Complaints tvcrc made as to the leisurely way in which the AA ailio Bridge works were proceeding. It was resolved to write the Public AAorks Department on the matter and to wait on the Minister of Lands. It was decided to meet Mr Dalgleish at the first opportunity and endeavor to arrange for the continuance of the winter school for AVostland farmers. E. .James. Okunt, forwarded a leiiglhy report on the Haast Pass route and the possibilities of opening up the route for tourist traffic. Tie indicated his idea of erecting a halfway house at the Bourke Flat, .and said lie would provide horses for travellers on the through trip. It) was resolved to co-operate in every way possible to open the route for general traffic.
T. Nolan wrote with regard to opening a prospecting and tourist track up the AA’ataroa river to the Berth and Scone.—Received. .Air Jeffries mentioned the need and desire lor the completion of the Coast road connection between Westport and Crevnvnith. Three bridges were still required ami only three miles and a half of road work. It was resolved to support the project, and urge the matter upon the Minister of Lands; also to ask the Canterbury League to support. I)r Teiclielinann mentioned that alien the road was through and linked up the Nelson and South Westland roads, the route would afford the finest motor trip in the world for varied scenery and way side entertainment.
Regret was expressed that the scheme to hasten the erection of the bridges on the South road had fallen through. It was resolved to urge the Government to provide a special grant for (lie works this year. Messrs Duff, Jeffries, Bruce and Dr Teiehelmnun to wait on the Minister of Lands.
ft was reported that the New Zealand Alpine Club was endeavouring to
arrange for a hut on Fox Glacier. It was resolved to co-operate and £lO was voted, to be subsidised by the Government.
Dr Tciebeliminn was tasked to arrange for a large supply of AVestland holiday hook lets to lie sent forward for the Toronto Exhibition. The annual meeting of the branch was fixed for May 10.
