Giving evidence before the Federal Electoral Reform Committee the diief electoral officer stated the Department had collected over 171,(100 in twelve months ill penalties of 2s (Id from poisons failing to enrol, which represent nearly twenty thousand electors. CYCLONE ON N.S.W. COAST. SYDNEY, April 18. A cyclone, accompanied by heavy rain, is raging along tho New South Wales coast. Many vessels have 1.-oon forced to return to port for shelter. BIG FIRES. BRISBANE, April 19. One of the most disastrous fires in the history of Queensland occ-urroed on Ipswich road, when the State joinery workers and sawmills of Hancock and Gore were destroyed. The damage to the joinery works is estimated at £ 100,000 sterling and to Hancocks at £2O,(XX). Flying sheets of corrugated' iron caused minor injuries to twenty persons. One fireman was trapped by flames on a bridge twenty-five feet from the ground. He jumped and was stunned but only slightly hurt. During the week-end a block ol buildings was destroyed ami damage to the extent of £IO,OOO done to Cooroy. Six buildings were burned valued at £3,000.
