Harry Newman, aged 27, and Gerald Thoinsa Silk, aged 27, were convicted of theft ol jewellery, and of assaulting John Joseph Clarkson, at Xorthcote, on March 29. (barged with being the driver of a motor ear in which he became involved in an accident, causing injury, and that be failed to render all practical assistance and to report the accident to the nearest police station. He was also charged that at Waitawa, on March 20,.1ie negligently drove a car along Pleasant Point road, thereby causing bodily injury to Douglas Christie.

Christie is a young man. and was returning home from a bicycle race, in which lie had participated, when lie and two companions were knocked ofl their bicycles through a car colliding with them. Christie was so badly hurt that he has been in the hospital ever since, and it was found necessary to amputate his right leg. Lengthy police evidence was heard, after which the accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court fort trial. Bail of £IOOO was allowed.

A dispute between fishermen came to a head in the Court yesterday when Joseph Senior was charged with pointing a. gun at two other fishermen. -McKonnon and Rolton. The incident occurred on a stretch of the Waihou river, known as Duck Creek, which i.s a flounder fishing place. There was apparently had blood between the parties. Senior alleging M.eKennon’s boat came, in too close to allow him to fish properly. Witnesses versions differed considerably, lull Senior was convicted and fined L's and costs. LODGE CONFERENCE. The Limiter; Express, when coining into Palmerston North station on Wednesday evening narrowly escaped colliding with the rear of the Fields’ express which was drawn up on the main line after discharging passengers. As it was the Limited over-rail the signal Hind stopped several car lengths from the rear of the Fields express. The lights on the van warned the Limited driver of his danger. It i.s understood an enquiry will be conducted by the authorities next week into the alleged dereliction of duty by a railway employee.
