BOOM IN BRITISH TYPEWRITERS.
EFFECT OF THE KING'S PROTEST LONDON, February 20. Trade in liritish typewriters bad a sudden boom yesterday ns the result of \ the- King’s condemnation at the HritI i ii Industries Fair at the White City of llu* use of foreign-made machines in liritish Government departments. Hundreds of orders, inquiries, and congratulations reached the Imperial Typewriter Company, of Leicester and High ITolborn, AV.C., according to Air N. W. R. Afawle. who tallied with the King mi Thursday. There was enthusiasm among the employees at the tine's factory in Leicester, where it is anticipated that 20 more men will la* taken on within six "weeks. A reporter who visited the Fair at Shepherd’s Rush. W. yesterday found the stalls of both the Bnrloch f 12, Southwark streett, S.E.) and the Imperial companies surrounded by crowds of buyers.
I -Mr -Miuvle said: | “A large insurance company lias just | placed an order for 200 machines, to replace any foreign-made typewriters they may have, and 12 have been taken away by another firm by motor-car. “ Every machine we sell means a week's work by a British ex-Servico man. who has been deprived of adequate wages through foreign competition. If the British typewriter industry could recapture three-quarters of the ground it has lost our factory alone could employ 1,000 men, instead of 150. The result of the King’s comment was also felt by the British Empire Typewriter Company, of West Bromwich and 77. Queen Victoria-street. E.e.
