The trial has commenced at Maryborough nf Sydney Turner, who is charged with the murder <>l Mrs Loveda.v, as cabled on 21st. March in his dental surgery at Maryborough. The police alleged that Turner first chloroformed Airs Loveday. and then poured cyanide of potassium down her throat. Correspondento was alleged to have been passed between the a ('cased and Mrs Loveday which disclosed the fact that Turner at one time, was Second Dental Surgeon at. the Vienna Court of the Austrian Emperor. Franz Josef. AN ADVENTUROUS UNDERTAKING. BRISBANE. April 11. Rigged with a flour-hag sail, and patched with hoards of kerosene cases, a sampan with four men, who said that they had voyaged from China, was wrecked on the beach in the far north coast of Queensland, while endeavouring to make Cooktown. Two of the party, Poynton and Cleiveuts, set off to walk through the hush to the township of Coen on the fifth of April. The country through which they passed was so rough that their feet were soon bleeding, and the grass was higher than the men’s heads. The walking was agonising, and they were compelled to make a canvas covering for their feet, hut this lasted only an hour or two. The provisions ran out. and the men were fed by aboriginals, who also undertook to guide them to Coen. On April Bth Poynton collapsed and while Clements was attending to him. the native guides decamped. "While searching for water. Clements had a had fall, and on April 10th both were vel'v ill and were starving. A pari/v of blacks then entile across them and took them to the ctim.p of a hushman named Dodds. The latter, however. was very ill and he died the following day. Clements took two of Dodds’ horses, and leaving Poynton to mind the camp he rode to Coen, arriving there yesterday, from where assistance was immediately sent to Poynton. MELBOURNE TRAM STRIKE OFF.
