DRY LAW
WASHINGTON, April 12. The Senate Committee inquiring as to tho Dry Law heard a. delegation of sixty-five representing organisations for women welfare, social workers and churchgoers, claiming to represent twelve million women, plead for the retention and enforcement of the A olstead Act in the name of wives and children. Tho delegates made onominutc speeches. They argued that prohibition lias had the following results.: (1) Women’s homes were bettered; secondly, men were saving money; and lastly, school children were better clothed. They said thov boro no figures nor statistics. They' had only a message from women of the nation against any dry law modification, and for bettor enforcement. Mrs Henry Peabody, chairwoman of the National Committee for Law Enforcement, was questioned regarding a section of the Enforcement Act. She said: “I am not acquainted with that section, with all the rosponsibilites I have. We stand for the strongest enforcement and the weakest liquor.” The delegates announced the organisation of a campaign of millions of women to bolster prohibition. BIG DEAL BY WHEAT COMBINE. ’ OTTAWA, April 12. A message from Regina, in Saskatchewan, says that the Co-operative Elevator Company. Ibe biggest grain company in the world, following on a two-day discussion, has voted to accept, the offer of the Saskatchewan wheat pool to purchase the assets and Imsincss of the company. The total purchase money will be settled by aibitration. The pool’s oiler involved the payment prior’to the meeting of 500,000 dollars, and a second payment o( 500.000 dollars on August Ist, 1026. The annual payment thereafter will be one million dollars,
