UNCLE’SAM’S THINKING CAP. NEW YORK. March 39. The Civil Liberties’ Union and tho Federal Council of Churches ore vaging a strenuous fight on beliall ol the alien population ol the United States. Following the attempt to exclude the Countess of Cathcart, on the grounds of “moral turpitude,” Air Curran, the Immigration. Commissioner, reported to the Government Immigration Committee thru over 1.0h'0.000 people resident in the country were "de|!ortahle aliens,” 30.000 of whom were living in New York. This proposed Immigration Rill is being vigorously opposed on tile ground that it is too drastic and would result in the deportation of many aliens legally entitled to reside in America. The Cathctirt case roused a storm of indignation throughout the country, over gPO women’s organisations protesting to Washington against the exclusion of Iho countess. The Press pointed out the far-reach-ing consequences such action might have on American citizens residing in other countries, if reprisals were adopted. ' “THE OTHER WAY.” Drilling with the exclusion of the countess and the admission of Lord Craven, who was cited with the o'." less in the double divorce proceedings, tlie New York “World” printed a leading article, “The (Other AY ay,” which consisted only of 11 verses from the New Testament, giving Christ’s defence of the woman taken in adultery. ‘■Deportahle Aliens,” the Immigration Committer nTiiiifains. means
