[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] EXPLOSION ON TANKER. VANCOUVER, April 11. A telegram from Port Arthur, in Texas, states: There was a terrific explosion aboard the oil tank steamer Gulf of Venezuela in the harbour hero on Sunday. It took a toll of twentythree lives, and injured more than a score and for a time it threatened the other shipping. Seven members of the ship’s crew of thirty-nine are missing, but it is believed that some of these are among the dead. A number of dock workers arc also missing. The explosion on the Gulf of Venezuela. was the result of a gasoline explosion and occurred during the early morning, while the hulk of the crew were asleep. The steamer, which carried one hundred thousand gallons of gasoline, was blown from, the uhaif in a sheet of flame. The ignition of a leakage from the tanks caused the disaster.
