The Rugby season opened on Saturday, though the round of the championship fixtures will not he commenced until a later date. The results were:—Athletic drew with Berhampore, six each; AA T ellington beat Marist by 8 to 3; and ’Yarsity (13) beat Old Boys (S). Oriental had an easy win over Hutt by 28 to 0. Petone and Ponekc, the old rivals, met in a Tom Cross benefit match before four thousand spectators. Petone placed a strong team in the field, including the three Nicliolls. Poneke led in the first spell by six to nil. In the second half, assisted by the wind. Petone ran up a good score. A remarkably good exposition of football was given by Mark Nicliolls. Tie kicked a goal f.’jd converted two tries scored by others. He himself scored two trios and converted one of them. He scored fifteen points out of a total of 21 gained by Petone. MAORI TEAM’S TOUR. ! LONDON, April 9. The Rugby Union Committee discussed the forthcoming Maori tour of France, it was stall'd that the Union was not concerned with the tour in anv way. and that no representative matches could he played, but that, subject to the Union receiving proper assurances that the financial arrangements of the tour are in accord with the amateur laws of the game, it was announced that there would bo no objection to English county and club sides playing against the Maoris. • ENOUGH COUNTY FINAL. LONDON, April 10. fo the County Championship final Yorkshire beat Hampshire by 15 to 14.
